Hawthorne’s Hundredth: Opening day, March 6th, 2009, will mark the 100th year of family-owned horseracing at Hawthorne Race Course (http://www.hawthorneracecourse.com). The anniversary distinguishes Hawthorne as the oldest continuously family-owned and operated race track in the nation. The milestone garners the attentions of a live ESPN Radio 1000 broadcast of opening weekend which begins Friday, March 6th. To launch the return of racing, the course will offer fans VIP status with a party offer at its exclusive Turf Club on March 7th. The VIP Turf Club Party package, which will also be offered to guests on other key race dates, starts at 12:30 p.m. and includes admission, a program, a 3 ½ hour house bar and a buffet package for $35.00 per person.
The spring thoroughbred season runs through April 29th at Hawthorne and features races every Thursday through Monday with first post daily at 1:25 p.m.
The Start of Sunda: Rockit Ranch Productions adds to its ever-growing dining and nightlife empire with the opening of Sunda (http://www.sundachicago.com) on Monday, March 9. The River North spot is at the vanguard of America’s New-Asian cuisine movement. Helmed by renowned Executive Chef Rodelio Aglibot (known as the “Food Buddha” to international media and the former opening chef at Koi in LA), Sunda showcases contemporary and progressive interpretations of traditional dishes from Japan, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and the rest of the Southeast Asian Island region. TV Tune Out: The Chicago Botanic Garden (http://www.chicagobotanic.org/familyprograms/dropin/) invites your family to put down the remote and head out the door to hear story-teller Anne Shimojima tell stories from all over the world. Children 4 and up are welcome to attend this event, presented on Saturday, March 7 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in connection with the "Winnetka Alliance for Early Education's TV Tune Out week." While there, stop by for hands-on fun with plants and nature in the Greenhouses — try a scavenger hunt, practice watering plants, and more. Activities in the Greenhouses are geared toward 2-to-5-year-olds with a caregiver. No registration is required. To coincide with the beginning of the spring planting season, Raymond discusses green roofs, rain gardens, living walls, rain water harvesting, and natural landscape care as some of the options that lessen environmental impact without sacrificing aesthetics. Argo Tea will be on site before the program with a tasting menu of their signature drinks.
