Big Top at Big John: Tonight, Jan. 21, the Signature Room presents the fourth annual Table of Twelve Gala at Signature Room (http://www.signatureroom.com). This “greatest party on earth,” dubbed Big Top at Big John, features amazing culinary feats in celebration of the 2009 Charity of the Month program. Tickets are $80, and the cocktail attire event runs from 7-10 p.m. The participating charities are: Project Linus, Special Olympics Illinois, Open Books, HELP (a program of Jane Addams Hull House Association), Build, Inc., The Land Connection, Lake County Haven, Children’s Home + Aid, Cases for a Cause, Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust, American Brain Tumor Association, Kids Fight Cancer.

My Father’s Paradise: The Spertus Museum presents an event and book signing (http://www.spertus.edu/programs/books/my_fathers_paradise.php) with Ariel Sabar on Sunday, Jan. 25. His book My Father’s Paradise is a fascinating reconciliation of past and present, he and his father travel to Iraq, his father’s birthplace. Sabar brings to life the ancient town of Zakho, telling his family’s story and discovering their place in the millennia-long saga of Sepharic Jews in Islamic lands. Populated by Kurdish chieftains, trailblazing linguists, Arab nomads, and devout believers, this intimate and powerful book is an improbable story of tolerance and hope. Tickets are $20; $15 for Spertus members, $10 for students. The event runs from 2-4 p.m.

The Animal Boogie: The Lincoln Park Zoo invites you to grab the family and boogie. On Saturday, Jan. 24, the Animal Boogie (http://www.lpzoo.org/events/boogie.html) at Café Brauer includes live music, including a special performance by Alex & the Kaleidoscope Band; fun with the Bubbles Academy; face painting; crafts; cookie decorating and more. This fund-raiser for the Endowed Fund for Conservation and Science features a kid-friendly atmosphere featuring a family-friendly brunch. Tickets are $150 for a family of four; individual tickets are $60 for adults, and $40 for children. The event’s hours are 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
