Buddy Guy In the Flesh: Buddy Guy (http://buddyguys.com/legends/all-things-january/) will be hitting his Legends stage 16 times this January, marking the beginning of his renowned club’s 20th year. Starting Thursday, January 8th, Mr. Guy will be playing four shows a week until Saturday, January 31st. People from all over the world flock to Chicago during one of the coldest times of the year to catch Mr. Guy play in his intimate, 400-person venue. Five-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Buddy Guy has had a banner year, from an appearance in Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones biopic, Shine a Light; to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine for their “100 Greatest Guitar Songs” issue. This weekend’s performance schedule: Friday, Jan. 9th with Brother John opening; Saturday, Jan. 10th with the NuBlu Band featuring Carlise Guy opening;
and Sunday, Jan. 11th with Big James & the Chicago Playboys opening.
Christmas Gift Exchange: Suspect you were on the wrong end of the re-gifting process? Broke up with your significant other right after the gift exchange? Just don’t like what you got? The Cubby Bear Wrigleyville (http://www.cubbybear.com/wrigleyville/) invites you to bring in any unwanted new items to benefit local homeless charities. In return, you’ll receive a bar gift certificate worth $15 or more. Offered daily through January 31. No cover, either.
Get Crabtastic: For once it’s acceptable, and even encouraged, to be crabby. Dungeness-style, that is. The annual Crab Festival (http://www.shawscrabhouse.com/events/crab_festival.shtml) at Shaw’s Crab House returns, featuring seasonal dishes throughout the month, including a three-course family-style crab dinner ($39.99) and a Dungeness crab dinner ($29.99). The festival is featured daily through January 31.
Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival: Laughs are a welcome distraction these days, and fortunately they are in abundance in the Windy City, thanks to The Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival (http://www.chicagosketchfest.com/). This annual event celebrates the best in local, national and international sketch comedy. Over two weeks, 100 sketch comedy troupes will perform 125 shows. In addition to the performances, the festival offers workshops, networking events, and children's programming. It runs from January 8-18 at the Theatre Building Chicago.
Cocktails and Clay: Tap into your inner artist, with inhibitions loosened a bit thanks to a cocktail. The Hyde Park Art Center presents Cocktails and Clay (http://www.hydeparkart.org/calendar/2007/02/cocktails_clay_3.php) every second Friday of the month from 8 p.m. - 12 a.m. (meaning Friday, Jan. 9). Try your hand at sculpture during this 45-minute group session, led by a teaching artist (materials are provided). The $15 suggested donation includes supplies, a DJ and a peek at the center's exhibitions. Cash bar.
