Katherine Dunham: Beyond the Dance
November 2, 2008 --- November 8, 2009
Katherine Dunham: Beyond the Dance will be an experience where traditional boundaries between theatre, museum, and visitor are swept aside. Through objects, costumes, stage settings, recorded media, and live performance spaces, museum visitors will be surround with the energetic life and legacy of Katherine Dunham.

She was one of the great dance pioneers of the 20th century – and so much more. Her influence extended from Broadway to Brazil; from Haiti to Hollywood; from Senegal to East St. Louis.

This once in a lifetime museum exhibition explores Dunham’s contributions to dance and anthropology; her career that spanned continents; and her civil rights activism. Mark the centennial of her birth by discovering the enduring legacy of “La Grande Katherine.” Organized by the Missouri Historical Society

George Washington Carver
November 28, 2008 --- March 1, 2009
George Washington Carver (1864–1943) may have been born a slave and orphaned as an infant, but he went on to become one of our nation’s most innovative scientists. Through rich imagery, historical artifacts, audio-visual programs, and hands-on activities, visitors will discover how Carver went from slave to scholar, his pioneering of natural product development, the work he did to resurrect the soil of the South, why he was the people’s scientist, and what his legacy is today.

Steaming into History: Steam Trains From the Collection of Des Lee

Bring the whole family for this rare opportunity to view a stunning display of 1:32 scale model trains that run on live steam! These three steam-powered model engines from the personal collection of Mr. Des Lee run on a large outdoor track. The trains will run from 2:00-4:00pm daily through January 30.


Storytelling in the Galleries

These programs engage our youngest visitors and their families in historic paintings and objects by using traditional and contemporary stories. Children will also enjoy a hands-on craft or other activity. Each 45-minute session is FREE. Programs are held Fridays at 10:30 a.m. (for ages 2–6) in the museum’s galleries and Saturdays at 1 p.m.* (for ages 10 and under) in museum classrooms. Check with the Information Desk at the museum for locations.

*NEW! Introducing our new Storytelling Workshops from Noon to 2 p.m. on Saturdays! Storytelling will still take place at 1 p.m. but come early or stay afterward to play with puppets, build a puzzle or read stories on your own.


Theatre in the Galleries

Historical characters come to life in one- or two-person plays. These free 20–minute programs include group discussion and are performed for the public on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 2pm in the Grand Hall of the museum.

Meriwether’s Restaurant
Meriwether's, the Museum's restaurant, is situated on the top floor of the Emerson Center, with a spectacular view of Forest Park through an expansive wall of curved glass from ceiling to floor. The menu offers a variety of choices and tops off a perfect day in Park.

The restaurant serves lunch Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. An excellent Sunday Brunch is available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For further restaurant information or to make reservations, call (314) 361-7313.
