Chicago’s Jazz Hands: Thirty may be the new 20 in people years, but for the Chicago Jazz Festival (http://www.chicagojazzfestival.us), the older the better. It’s the city of Chicago's longest running music festival, and this year’s headliners include Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman. This Labor Day weekend tradition consumes Grant Park for three days of free music, Friday, Aug. 29-Sunday, Aug. 31. Find three stages of free music, activities and more from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. In addition, the Chicago Jazz Festival features an art fair located in the rose garden between Jackson Blvd. and Buckingham Fountain, while world famous restaurants will offer delights and beer and soda vendors will have thirst quenchers onsite. As always, the entire family can enjoy jazz at all of the stages, and a new kid's activity area will be making its debut this year.
Summer’s Fiery End: Summer goes out with a bang, literally, at Navy Pier. This holiday weekend marks the end of the seasonal weekly fireworks show (http://navypier.com/things2do/fireworks.html). Due to the holiday, there’s an additional show, so you can catch the stunning display either Saturday, Aug. 30 at 10:15 p.m. or Sunday, Aug. 31 at 9:30 p.m. Lots of cruise lines and tours make special trips to coincide with this festive 10-minute display over Lake Michigan, which is also set to live music.
A Bear of a Brunch: The Cubs are home this Labor Day Weekend (vs. Philly), so catch the Cubby Bear’s (http://www.cubbybear.com/wrigleyville/index.html) $5 all-you-can-eat brunch buffet on either Saturday, Aug. 30 or Sunday, Aug. 31 to energize you before you root them on.
