Jammin’ at the Zoo: This year’s popular music series ends Friday, Aug. 22 with Soul Asylum with Pat McGee Band (http://www.lpzoo.org/events/jammin2008.html). Concerts are held at Lincoln Park Zoo on the Main Mall. Seating is general admission, and guests are invited to bring small blankets. Park Place Café is open for those who want to come early and eat dinner. Beer and wine will be available for purchase for guests 21 and older. The Kovler Lion House and Kovler Sea Lion Pool will be open during the event. Zoo grounds close at 5 p.m. for setup, and everyone must leave zoo grounds. Zoo members with tickets and Lincoln Park Zoo Member ID can enter 15 minutes early at 5:45 p.m. Gates open to the general public at 6 p.m., and the opening act starts at 7 p.m., with the headliner at 9 p.m. Individual Ticket prices vary: Advance Adult $23, Adult Zoo Member $21, Child $12, Child Zoo Member $10; At gate Adult $28, Adult Zoo Member $26, Child (ages 4-12) $14, Child Zoo Member (ages 4-12) $12; Series Tickets (all three concerts) Adult $60, Adult Zoo Member $55, Child $30, Child Zoo Member $25.
Meet Mackenzie: Atlas Galleries invites art enthusiasts to get personal with its Meet the Artist Mackenzie Thorpe (http://www.atlasgalleries.com/index.cgi) event on Friday, Aug. 22 from 6-8 p.m. The fresh simplicity of Thorpe’s images evokes the innocence of childhood with tenderness, passion and humor. Thorpe, who resides in England, was requested to create loving images for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Save the Children Fund, and the British Dyslexia Foundation. This event takes place at the 900 N. Michigan Ave., Level 6 location.
Chicago’s Iron Chef: This weekend, Kitchen Stadium’s smackdown gets a taste of the Windy City, with a bit of Latin flavor. Mercat a la Planxa’s (http://www.mercatchicago.com/) own chef Jose Garces will appear on this week’s episode. In celebration of this, the restaurant offers an Iron Chef America Screening Dinner & Wine Pairing on Sunday, Aug. 24. The evening begins with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception, followed by a progressive tasting dinner with wine pairing, plus specialty cocktail introductions. Price: $125.
Junior’s Blues Brunch: For a taste of Chicago Blues in the Maxwell Street Tradition, look no further than Junior’s Sports Lounge (http://www.juniorschicago.com/) in University Village. This Sunday, Aug. 24, marks the final weekend that Junior’s hosts its Blues Brunch, featuring the best of local blues musicians, many of them legendary veterans of the famed Maxwell Street Market. The diverse menu includes everything from burgers and wings to make-your-own omelets. Brunch is offered from 12-2 p.m.
Viva! Chicago: Celebrate the Latin sounds at the 20th Annual Viva Latin Music Festival (http://www.vivachicago.us). Held in Grant Park from Saturday, Aug. 23-Sunday, Aug. 24, this event is a great place for families. This vibrant Latin music festival showcases local, national and international talent in the various Latin music genres that include salsa, reggaeton, mariachi, norteña, Spanish pop and more. Many artists are Grammy award winners and nominees. Daily hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and admission is free. Groups scheduled to perform include: Malo featuring Jorge Santana; Don Tetto; Grupo Mania; Yamil; Everardo Rey y su Flota Musical; Menudo; and Mike Roman & The Tell Stars. In addition to great music, traditional foods are available. Local and international merchants vend authentic wares from the indigenous people of the Americas including artistic tapestries. Other items include wool clothing, artwork, and jewelry. And new this year, a lowrider car show. Children’s entertainment is also offered in the Kid's Zone.
