Ramp it Up: Va Pensiero, (http://www.va-p.com) along with several other Chicago restaurants (312, Lula Cafe, Blackbird, and Vie), has teamed with The Land Connection (http://www.thelandconnection.org) to celebrate Ramp Festival, The Land Connection's 4th Annual Spring Fundraiser. The event takes places on Friday, March 28 from 7-9:30 pm at Prairie Production, 1314 West Randolph St. Seen as a wonderful sign that spring is near, ramps are the first edible greens that appear in Midwestern forests each spring. They are in the allium family (along with onions, garlic, and leeks), and were called chicagoua (she-ca-goo-ah) by the native Miami and Illinois peoples. This was also the Indian name for the Chicago River, along which ramps grew abundantly. In the late 17th Century, French explorers began referring to the area at the mouth of the Chicago River as "Chicago." Va Pensiero's Chef Eric Hammond will prepare a Ramp Crepe with a Roasted Pepper Mascarpone filling for the event. The dish will also be served in the restaurant during Ramp Fest. Food and libations will be provided by Goose Island Beer, Pastoral Artisan Cheese, Bread & Wine, and many other local businesses. There will be auction items in both a Silent Auction and Live Auction called by professional farm auctioneer Larry Wettstein. $90 for Regular Tickets and $120 for Benefactor tickets.
