Know Your Roots: The DuSable Museum of African American History presents its 34th annual Arts and Crafts Festival, July 12-13. It will feature African and African-American created arts and crafts plus live entertainment, music and dancing. Performing artists include R&B violin sensation, Lee England, Jr.; Englewood’s Imani African Dance Troupe; Verbal Balance; The Family Reunion Band; and the Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago. Get Fresh: Like food that’s tasty and healthy? Of course! Grab a tote and stop by the Green City Market in Lincoln Park at Clark Street and Lincoln Avenue. You’ll find fresh groceries provided by local farmers from Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois. All-natural meat, dairy, produce, baked goods, plants, flowers—even candles and bath products—are available 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Not only do they have raw goods, but organically prepared foods as well. Mag Mile Arts: Every summer, top Chicago artists are hand-picked by a jury of esteemed critics to showcase their work at the Chicago Tribune’s Magnificent Mile Arts Festival. Located right in the heart of Michigan Avenue at Pioneer Court, this free, three-day arts fair (July 11-13) exhibits over 200 different artists including painters, photographers, sculptors, and jewelers. With all of the work available for sale, and prices ranging from $15 to $20,000, everyone can own an acclaimed masterpiece. Furthermore, all artists are required to be present at the festival at all times, so don’t hesitate to ask them questions about their motivations, inspirations, and craftsmanship! What Gravity?: Breathtaking and gravity-defying stunts are the main event at Navy Pier's Shakespeare Theater July 11and 12 at 9 p.m. The "Maudits Sonnants: Celestial Carillion" will be performed by the Comagnie Transe Express, a French company that has toured across Africa, Europe, Australia and now North America. The aerial theater performance is part of the Shakespeare Theater's World's Stage Series. Both of this weekend's performances are free to the public. Summer Suspense: Spend a summer-time Sunday night watching a great movie in a serene Chicago Park. Suspense master Alfred Hitchcock's film, “Rear Window,” is screening in Oz Park July 12th as part of the Chicago Park District's "Movies in the Park" Program. The Hitchcock masterpiece stars Academy Award-winning actors James Stewart and Grace Kelly in a mesmerizing thriller about suspicion and the power of perception. It's hailed by the American Film Institute as one of the top 100 movies of all time. The venue, Oz Park, is named for L. Frank Baum's wonderland of Oz, and has statues of The Tin-Man, Dorothy, The Cowardly Lion and The Scarecrow scattered about.
