Scope and Responsibilities
• Provides top leadership and direction for fund raising special events.
• Works in collaboration with staff, board, and volunteers to plan, coordinate and implement all aspects of special events activities to support revenue generating goals.
• Be a member of the Development Department team in developing and executing a comprehensive special events strategy.
• Reports to Senior Director of Development.
Key Duties
• Event Director of the ABC7 Jim Gibbons 5K Run, 3K Walk and Survivors’ Strut, one of the most recognized and respected Run/Walks in Chicago marking its 14th year on June 19, 2008.
• Event Sponsorship Sales – research, identify, solicit, cultivate, secure, and steward individuals and organizations.
• Design, direct and implement plan for comprehensive special events initiatives:
o Evaluate special events strategy effectiveness and employ changes required for improvement.
o Develop and meet annual special events fundraising goals.
o Recruit, manage, empower volunteer committees.
o Prepare and maintain budgets, regularly monitor expenditures.
o Oversee management of staff of two, set individual goals, evaluate performance, training and motivation, and encourage professional development. Monitor and ensure day-to-day performance.
o Serve as the LRF point-of-contact on 3rd party fund raisers.
o Advise/guide/work with local LRF chapters on their events or fundraising projects. Occasionally manage chapter events when needed. Maintain a keen knowledge of each projects critical activity.
o Develop and maintain a strong working relationship with external publics and internal departments involved in LRF events.
o Develop and maintain a strong working relationship with outside vendors.
o Develop and oversee production of all event materials and information.• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Pre-Requisites for Success:
• 3-5 years in event management including proven track record with runs, walks, and golf events.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
• Sponsorship sales experience.
• Mandatory computer skills including MS Office, Adobe and Raiser’s Edge.
• Experience in non-profit or fundraising setting.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with a wide range of individuals and constituencies at senior levels.
• Highly organized, able to work both independently and as part of a team, motivated self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills, detail-oriented and accurate, able to work under deadlines.
• Advanced oral and written communication skills. Bilingual (Spanish) a plus.
• Demonstrated supervisory/management experience.
• Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
• Familiarity with Chicago-area philanthropy helpful.
• Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed, have access to an insured automobile, and lift up to 35 pounds on occasion.
Compensation:• Commensurate with experience.
